An introduction to the Third Sector

The voluntary sector differs in many ways from the private and public sectors, and your experience is therefore likely to be different to what you are used to. Charities work with very limited resources, so everything spent on management is money taken away from operations; they can rarely make spending decisions common to commercial organisations and stretched resources are often focused on service delivery rather than strategic planning.

Many charity workers have a particular interest or personal involvement in what they do, over and above that of someone in the business sector and they often work with particular groups, so may have their own terms and vocabulary which require a certain level of sensitivity.

Charities are controlled by a Board of Trustees, usually acting voluntarily and sharing ultimate responsibility for governing a charity and directing how it is managed and run. They may be called trustees, the Board, the management committee, governors, directors or something else. They may have very different backgrounds to the staff of the charity, but they can bring other attributes to the charity, such as specific professional experience or perhaps representing service users or other stakeholders.

In this section you will find lots of information on other organisations that support the third sector and also details of webinars we deliver to share knowledge and expertise with our volunteers and the wider sector. Lots more information is available in the Cranfield Trust Way, if you haven't yet received a copy, please speak with your Project Manager who will be able to send you a copy.
